(Washington, D.C.) – Today, House Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Brian Babin and Research and Technology Subcommittee Chairman Jay Obernolte sent a letter to the Government Accountability Office (GAO) requesting a comprehensive review of existing federal and state laws and regulations governing artificial intelligence (AI).
As AI continues to reshape the economy and national security landscape, a growing number of federal and state actions—including legislation, executive orders, agency guidance, and oversight mechanisms—are influencing how AI systems are developed and deployed.
In the letter, the Chairmen write, "Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a transformative technology with the potential to both improve and disrupt society." They note that numerous regulatory efforts are underway across agencies and individual states, creating an increasingly complex framework for AI innovation.
To inform future legislative efforts, the Chairmen request that GAO examine "the current laws and regulations governing AI at both the federal and state levels," including laws that specifically address AI and existing statutes that may already apply to AI systems.
The review will help ensure Congress has a clear understanding of the existing regulatory landscape as it evaluates the appropriate path forward for artificial intelligence policy.
