(Washington, DC) Today, House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology Ranking Member Frank Lucas (R-OK) and Subcommittee on Research and Technology Ranking Member Michael Waltz (R-FL) released the following statements on the launch of an investigation by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) into the causes of the disastrous partial collapse of the Champlain Towers South Condominium in Surfside, Florida:

“The federal response to the tragedy in Surfside must include efforts to prevent this type of disaster from happening again,” said Lucas. "NIST’s investigation will be central to this cause. Bringing the full scope of their experience to the table will allow them to inform communities across the country of what needs to be done to protect American lives. I appreciate their proactive launch of the investigation and have faith that, with their unique expertise at the helm, we will get to the bottom of the events of June 24th.”

“The American people—and especially the residents of Surfside—need answers on how a tragedy like this took place,” said Waltz. "I’m pleased NIST is investigating this disaster so we can have an understanding of how the Champlain Towers collapsed and prevent future incidents from occurring.”
