WASHINGTON – Science, Space, and Technology Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas) praised last night’s passage of H. Res. 818, the FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016. This bill includes many provisions of the Flight R&D Act that was introduced by U.S. Rep. Steve Knight (R-Calif.) and marked-up and passed by the Science Committee earlier this year.
Chairman Lamar Smith (R-Texas): “The passage of the FAA Extension, Safety, and Security Act of 2016 is a step toward ensuring safety and security research and development activities advance our nation’s aviation efforts. The provisions from the Science, Space, and Technology Committee in this bill will increase public safety and private commerce. These provisions will also further develop a cybersecurity research and development plan, a study on metrics, a research plan for unmanned aircraft systems traffic management, and the establishment of an unmanned and manned aircraft collisions research program. I look forward to seeing these programs materialize, and I’m proud to have voted in favor of strengthening our nation’s aviation abilities.”
Background:
On February 11, the Committee approved the FAA Leadership in Groundbreaking High-Tech R&D Act, or Flight R&D Act.
The Science Committee has jurisdiction over all civil aviation research and development.
