Views and Estimates of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on the FY 2020 Budget Request for Submission to the Budget Committee

While it obviously is impossible to prepare a comprehensive review of the President's Fiscal Year (FY) 2020 budget request given that the FY 2020 budget request has not yet been released to Congress, we would note that in the President's FY 2019 budget request we witnessed a continued disregard for science as massive cuts were made to vital research and development (R&D) funding. Unfortunately, we again expect to see more proposed cuts in crucial funding areas like R&D, innovation, …  Continue Reading

Minority Views and Estimates of the Democratic Caucus of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on the FY 2019 Budget Request for Submission to the Budget Committee

The President’s Fiscal Year (FY) 2019 budget request, while less damaging than his FY 2018 request, continues the trend of making ill-considered funding cuts and underinvesting in the research and development that is critical to the future prosperity, national security, and well-being of the nation. We will not attempt to engage in a detailed discussion of recommended funding levels for specific programs in these V&E, but we urge the Budget Committee, as it works to craft its Budget …  Continue Reading

Minority Views and Estimates of the Democratic Caucus of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on the FY 2017 Budget Request for Submission to the Budget Committee

It is impossible to provide thoughtful consideration of the President’s fiscal year 2017 (FY17) budget request in these Views and Estimates because of the arbitrary deadline that has been imposed, requiring them to be submitted before the President’s budget request is delivered to Congress. Therefore, we will not attempt to engage in a detailed discussion of funding levels for specific programs. Instead, we will focus on the importance of committing to robust and sustained investments in …  Continue Reading

Minority Views and Estimates of the Democratic Caucus of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on the FY 2016 Budget Request

The President’s budget request represents a significant step forward for investments in our country’s future.  Sequestration had crippled our ability to make needed investments so that we could keep pace with the innovation and education commitments being made by our economic competitors.  With this budget the President has left sequestration behind, proposing responsible increases in programs that insure we remain globally competitive--creating good, skilled jobs now and in the future.  While …  Continue Reading

Minority Views of the Democratic Caucus of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology on the FY2013 Budget Request

We are pleased to see that the President’s budget for FY2013 continues to propose investments in this Nation’s future even as it takes steps to reign in the government’s long-term deficit challenge.  All of us believe that investing in the future of America--in its infrastructure, in research and innovation, and in the education of our children and workforce--represents the most important step the Federal government can do to ensure long-term economic success for the American people.  Cutting …  Continue Reading
