Committee Members Call for Release of NRC Yucca Mountain Documents

Feb 10, 2011

Washington, DC – Science, Space, and Technology Committee Members today called on the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) to release for public review information related to its scientific and technical evaluation of the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository.  In particular, the letter requests Volume III of the NRC’s Safety Evaluation Report Related to Disposal of High-Level Radioactive Wastes in a Geologic Repository at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.

The report was planned for release last year and was delivered to the NRC Office of Nuclear Material Safety and Safeguards in July 2010 for final approval and publishing, but has yet to be released by the Commission.

The letter was signed by Science, Space, and Technology Committee Chairman Ralph Hall (R-TX), Vice-Chairman Jim Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee Chairman Paul Broun (R-GA), and Energy and Environment Subcommittee Chairman Andy Harris (R-MD).
